But I have another confession: I didn't eat sushi til 3 months after I started dating A. It's true- my first time EVER eating sushi was at a place called Asuka in Nicholasville on one of our early dates. I had serious reservations about sushi despite the fact that my parents and brother LOVE it. Eating raw fish just didn't make sense to me, it sounded gross and what if I got sick? None of these things are valid, of course, but WHAT IF. What if nothing... I tried it, loved it, and here I am- not able to get enough of it!
I missed out on 22 years of one of the best food EVER! Major bummer, but we're catching me up. Our favorite sushi place is a 25 seat restaurant in a strip mall that's across a side road from Kroger. No joke, I'm talking Subway, Baskin Robbins, Little Caesar's, Collectibles Inc. (a comic book store) and an insurance company. Klassy. There is absolutely nothing glamorous about this place but we're not glamorous type of people, so it's preferable. It's family owned, and because we go there so much, they know us pretty well. They occasionally bring us appetizers, and they are all around SO good to us all around- they ask A where I am when he goes by himself. A gets diet Coke, and I get water, and their son simply says, "Water? Diet Coke?" and... that's it! All I have to say is yes? Easiest ordering EVER! Great for lazy people like ourselves.

Anyway, despite the outward appearance, they are by far the BEST sushi in Lexington; we're a small town but we have a strangely disproportionate number of sushi places. Tastes the best, the most reasonably priced. Even ordering is easy, they give us a laminated sheet with all their rolls and prices, we mark with a vis-a-vie marker what we want. We could GRUNT if we wanted to. This is what we normally get (clockwise from top left): the Smile roll (crab and... I have NO idea what else), yellow tail roll (this is the roll we vary depending on what A feels like), avocado roll, and a best friend roll (asparagus and kanto).

I am totally in love with sushi now. I even took my friend for her first roll a couple of weeks ago! It was less than a success, but I remain hopeful. All thanks to my lovely boyfriend! I don't know what I would have done had I not discovered him (or sushi) 15 years down the road. I'm still learning about it, of course. I still won't eat eel or urchin, but maybe we'll get there eventually.
Glamour shot:

What new things has your SO introduced you to? I'm trying Thai food next!!!
*Disclaimer: the family that owns Tokyo Sushi has NO idea I'm writing about their restaurant and I didn't receive any compensation for writing this piece; I just love them that much!*
